Regional Debating Championships

Saturday, 24th of February saw the KahurangiMarlborough Regional Debating Championships with Garin’s two teams returning exemplary results. The first team consisting of Dylan Didi, Max Schneider and Vianne Wessels won two out of their four debates; especially good considering the team included two first time debaters. The second team; Megan Ritchie, Jade Alborn and Theo Gabites did incredibly well, progressing through the four round-robin debates unbeaten before reaching the Grand Final. Debating the topic of banning artists performing in countries that have serious breaches of human rights saw intense arguments from Garin and their Nayland opposition however in the end, Garin came out on top. Having won overall, there was more good news to come with Megan being named as a reserve in the team to represent the region at the Russell McVeagh NZ Schools Debating Championships and Theo getting awarded best debating style overall as well as being selected for the regional team. The day involved interesting topics including banning politicians from social media, reserving places for Maori in university and ending private healthcare. These topics pushed the Garin debaters, all of whom came out of it significantly improved. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, with new friends made and great banter had.
