Garin Day Mass
We thank Father Seph Pijfers for presiding over the the mass and also thank our students and staff for their participation in the mass through prayer and song. This celebration mass was an historic occasion in the history of Garin College. We were especially honoured to have Sir Patrick Mahony and his two sons, Tom and Ged, present to the college the gift of the two silver candlesticks from Father Garin‘s circa 1800 travelling mass kit. The candle stands were originally gifted to Sir Patrick‘s grandparents and had been in the Mahony family for a number of generations. Father David Kennerley, Provincial of the Marist Order was present to bless this historic taonga on behalf of the Marist Order. As a college we are immensely grateful to Sir Patrick for this gift to our college. These candle stands enable our college community to make both spiritual and physical links to Father Garin. Father Garin as a Marist modelled his life on the person of Mary. He also was quick to do God‘s will, and to follow God‘s call to bring the Gospel to our region. Father Garin valued the education of young people and saw them as the way to change the world. As a relatively young school that opened in 2002, we are are conscious that we need to build traditions and gain a sense of history.
