Bridge Building Competition - 2017

Garin College won the 2017 Nelson-Marlborough Institute of Technology Bridge Building Competition. The Bridge Building Competition is organised by NMIT's Civil Engineering tutors. Civil Engineering is all about infrastructure. Building bridges with a set amount of resources but a design of the students' choosing, shows what a difference design and an understanding of the Physics involved can make. Throughout Term 2, Level 3 Physics and Level 2 Applied Science have been researching, designing, building and testing pine wood bridges. The bridges had to be built to design specifications set by NMIT. The bridges were judged based on the ratio of the weight of the bridge to the load the bridge would hold. Bridges were also judged on aesthetic appearance. Winning teams included Garin's Steady Stand True (Catherine Ritchie, Julia Froeling and Tayne Clements) whose bridge weighed175 grams and held a weight of 35 kilograms. Garin's best bridge was built by team In God We Truss (Shinn Krammer, Jordon Reif and Kobe Harpur) which weighed 175 grams and held 37 kilograms. This bridge also won Most Aesthetic securing the overall win for Garin.
