Year 13 Journey Camp

12/02/2017

During year 13 journey we had the privilege of chatting with Naomi Aporo, a strong leader and business woman in the Wakatu Incorporation. We were taught about humans connectedness to the earth and the environment. We the tangata whenua, have certain places that we feel at home with and at peace within ourselves. We leant how all things within our environment are interconnected and that we need to care of Papatūānuku. Particularly for Naomi and one of our other leaders, Mike Elkington, both members of the Ngati Koata tribe, Marahau holds an incredibly strong significance for them. One of Ngati Koata’s roles is protecting tuatara which meant, thanks to Mike, we were able to have a once in a lifetime experience holding one of these beautiful reptiles. -Reflection from Abbey Hahn
